An exercise in mind/body connection we played with in today’s BOOST dance session.

Practising gently can help to make shimmies more powerful.

How can this be? 

Because relaxation and strength are two sides of the same coin. 

One cannot exist without the other.

A strong bow can shoot very far.. but only if you can let go of the arrow.

O.. ONLINE (why yes indeed, I’m reverse-spelling O.. ONLINE (why yes indeed, I’m reverse-spelling BOOST 😄)

Before starting to teaching online, I really wondered (also as a participant 😄) whether it would be possible at all to teach/learn/transmit/share movement well enough through a screen to really make a difference.

I now do believe that yes.. with some adaptations on every side, it is.

It means doing our best (with whatever means we have available) to make communication as clear as possible.

This could make for a long, long post on different ways to tweak things, which I may write about in the blog @joyofmovementblog if there are dancers who would love to read about this (add a YES if this is you!) 

Next to that though, what kind of took me by surprise, is how WELL some things csn be learned, and taught via video.

Anything where experience is the focus. 

Where audio and visual input can be mixed with what we feel, and we ourselves can visualise/imagine/experience.

Anything we can DO instead of simply copy.

And our BOOST Program fits this type of teaching/learning/experiencing (thankfully) really well. 

So.. what else do we have on the cover image?

Flexibility & Dance

These are so very much connected, aren’t they?

Without flexibility it’s hard to move. 

When it’s harder to move (or even feel our movements well), it’s much less fun/easy to dance.

With visualisation/experiencing added to both dance and flexibility, the effects are even stronger.

For instance.. if you swipe the Caroussel you’ll see what we did in class today.

Or rather, the after-BOOST-Strength session feeling.

On Strength/Activation Day for Hip Shimmies we did a few gentle weight and bodyweight exercises -plus visualisations and different joint/posture positionings.

What came out of it was MORE range of motion and flexibility in the movements.

(even before sleeping on it - and that’s where the true magic may happen)

And we didn’t even (yet!) stretch.

Interesting, huh? 

THIS is why I love the BOOST Series so much..
Real changes happening. 

Even ‘just’ online. 

And ‘just’ with gentle movement.

Within one day. In 30 minutes.
This gives me hope. It’s never too late.

I hope that many dancers may find their way to #BOOST.

(BOOS)T is for TIMELESS - As in it is literally ne (BOOS)T is for TIMELESS - As in it is literally never too late to learn. Agreed?

At 42(!) I am still discovering, uncovering and re-discovering the power of dance, art and movement, every day. 

One thing I learned over the years (a tially, it is a fairly recent discovery, so perhaps it IS age related, in a way 😅) is that numbers don‘t mean as much as we might think they do.

Energy does. Intention does. Action does.

We can change more by our own actions (and the thoughts/habits behind them!) than we may currently believe. 

Also.. the more we move - in healthy, varied, interesting-to-our-mind-and-body ways, and the better we (re)learn to take care of ourselves, the more opportunities for growth and change will open up. 

I‘ve witnessed this in myself, and others.

So I want to share the word, but even more, the actual experience. 

With as many dancers as I can.

And that‘s why I’ve created BOOST 💕

Strength for Freedom
Relaxation for Power
Dance for Joy

2021 - A YEAR TO REMEMBER How very different hav 2021 - A YEAR TO REMEMBER 

How very different have things worked out than we imagined them just a year ago, huh?

We are one quarter into 2021, and I feel it‘s more important than ever now to keep flowing. To hold on.

To be gentle with ourselves, and with others.

To look within. And without. To help out. In whichever way we can. 

#BOOST21 is a mix of all these things for me.

It feels right. Somehow. 

It has helped enormously to keep me focused on what‘s important.

Kept me accountable. Even on time 😄

And it asks me to keeps moving. Growing. Learning. Adapting. Always.

Giving. Receiving. Creating. Sharing.

Staying stable. Staying present. Connected.

This BOOST Series has been like a safe haven for the past almost-year for me. 

And - I hope/imagine - for those taking part in it, too.

It‘s been acting as an anchor. A source of hope, positivity, community, joy.

Even in these times.

Especially in these times. 

And all this.. by of the Power of Movement. 

How everything can change when we move. 

I‘m so very thankful for every #BOOSTie that I’ve gotten to know and get to share these moments of transformation (big or small) with. 

I haven‘t really been able to post/share much about the BOOST seeies since we‘ve started.

I‘ve been too immersed in the doing. The experiencing. The journey. 

So much has happened in these past weeks. So many beautiful things. Small moments. Big changes. 

And also.. Pet/kid/partner cameos, bunnies, cats, dogs, laughter, epiphanies.

I adore reading the feedbacks after our sessions. Even/Especially from our participants who are only able to join via recordings. 

It boggles the mind what is possible now through technology.

And I‘m so very thankful we get to do this.

3 Months into the year already. And we’re on the brink of BOOST Season 2.

I‘m not sure what the next 12 weeks will bring, but I know that I am thankful we can do this.

A huge thank you to each and every #BOOSTie for the trust.

Let‘s do this. Let‘s keep the transformations going. 

Let us move and change the world. For the better. Starting with ourselves 🌎 Always.

CHOOCHOO Shimmies - How to make them easier? Three CHOOCHOO Shimmies - How to make them easier? Three quick tips below!

1. Get up there ALL the way

Practice going into full relevé, in other words, go as high in relevé as possible, really bring the heels all the way up. 

It may seem like more of an effort this way, but trust me. 

Full relevé will make it much much easier to balance (really!) your center of gravity and it’s less tiring on your calf muscles, so you can sustain your choochoo shimmies for longer (and travel/layer them more easily) 

Along with that, be sure bring your weight under the ‘pad’ of your big toe (think of bringing the ankles/inner legs together) whenever in relevé to keep your ankles in alignment and give you added stability for traveling.

2. Turnout & Foot/Leg placement

For added balance and a beautiful line, have one foot a toe length in fron of the other (not too much!), turn out both legs from the hip socket, and cross the front leg over slightly 

3. Tempo & Timing 

Soften your knees for more hip range (not too much! goldilocks style ✨) and slow down your footsteps enough to enable your hips to move in tempo with the music. One step, one hip. 

This MAY feel a lot slower than you are used to doing a choochoo, but it makes the movement MUCH more visible (and fun!)

PS: THIS is WHY we work on body alignment, feeling/connecting to your joints, opening up ranges of motion in app kinds of places as well as gentle strenghtening in my BOOST Series. 

It literally makes EVERYTHING easier if you work on the skills UNDERNEATH the dance drills first. 

..I had to learn this the hard way, as I did things the other way around.. FIRST I practiced and drilled everything untill I nearly dropped (and burnt myself out in the process), and THEN I got smart about conditioning 🙊 

My life has never been the same 💪🏻⚡️🔥🤗✨

There’s a shimmy for every mood and music! 

- sustained hip shimmies (so versatile and great for level changes)
- egyptian shimmies (excellent for layering)
- choochoo shimmies (paddle and float, these look so magical!)
- walking shimmies (because, you know, then you can shimmy AND walk!)
- 3/4 shimmies (earthy & fun)
- hagalla shimmies (more earthy, more fun!)
- twist shimmies (so effective)
- flutter shimmies (now that they FINALLY work 😆)
- shoulder shimmies (playful as accents)
- shiver/freeze shimmies (lovely for taxeem)
- earthquake/bounce shimmies (drumsolo favourite!)
- shimmy layering (make it a shimmy party!)

The advantage of practising many different shimmy types is that it gives you much more freedom as you dance with them.

1. Move from the Heart

This I mean literally and figuratively. 

Move from the center of your upper body, breathe freely, and pay attention to what’s going on inside your body/mind dueing oractive if you tend to get distracted while performing.

Chances are, it is connected. 

You can practive your mindset and use the power of your imagination FOR you, and not against you (as we often tend to do) 

What this means? 

✨ Tell yourself good things while dancing. 
✨ Remember why you love to move and create. 
✨Allow yourself to learn as you go.

My Top Tip: Imagine (really!) that you’re enjoying your performance with every cell of your body.

Tune in to your senses to tune into your body: Feel the flow of air as you move, hear the music, hear the silk, feel your feet on the floor, feel your wrists, relax them.. notice your breath, and let it flow. 

2. Create Imagery

Do this with the silks, AND with your body lines.

✨ Imagine you’re a painter. Creating moving images on a big, invisible, 2 AND 3D canvas.
✨ Use the area between the lines of your body and the lines of your silks to create ‘dark space images’ (Comment 😗 below if you’re not sure what I mean 😄)
✨ Take up ALL the space (work on opening your posture as part of your practice, have a conditioning/stretching routine in place that feels good for YOU - @fitwithkhalida
✨ Work on smooth traveling steps and turns as well as expansive poses that look amazing on YOUR body to get the MAXIMUM of joy, confidence and visual impact in ALL your silk prop dances

3. Be sure to DANCE.

This one makes all the difference.

✨ Try out (film!) how your dance would look WITHOUT the props, and tweak/adapt/refine/polish accordingly. 
✨Usually it’s a matter of tweaking your posture and adjusting your joint positions in motion

‘Day 3 of week 1 - Dance

Day 1 of week 2 - Strength of @khalidabech ‘s 36 weeks Bellydance Boost 🧡 

So I will tell the truth, I have done day 3 - the dance bit twice last week, once because my week start was free, and it felt nice, and for the second time yesterday on Sunday to have a little bit of movement in my life towards the end of the week! 

So as expected, a little rusty (wanted to point out all of my mistakes round here but then realised I can only improve them with trying and not with judging soo I’ll leave the self criticism out of it now 😅 sorry about the concentrating face 😶) but it felt really good to dance and after months and months I did have something to write about in my 2 years long Gratitude Journal 📓 

I used to write in something every day, but stopped that too when went back to work, because for a long time I really struggled to find things I’m really grateful for so it was quite nice to get back to this routine too! 
It also trains your mind to write down the things we are grateful for, as the brain starts following that pattern and after while it starts noticing the positive things instead of negative ones! 🧠 

I also found it that morning exercising and dancing is more suitable for me, not just because it influences my day to be better but because I’m more mentally open to challenges and it makes it easier to learn new things! 

Strength training wise I definitely find it that I used to the more intensive routines but it also feels really good to take it slow and build from there instead of being unable to lift a spoon or walk properly because of muscle exhaustion 🥱 

I also learnt today how eye movements can free up movement range through neurobiological connections and it amazes me that I could literally twist my body an extra 15 cm just by controlling my eye movements!’

‘Day 2 of week 1 of #boost21 with @khalidabech 

So I wasn’t planning on posting today, but as agreed, it felt nice and I will just leave this here, because I’m thrilled how my morning went. 🌷 

I used to always follow the cycle of the 🌙 - some people believe this, many don’t, but it certainly has helped me a lot to do things intentionally synced with the Moon but given up on this all when my weekly yoga classes were cancelled due to the pandemic 🧘🏻‍♀️ 

But this morning after seeing a beautiful picture of the Moon 🌝 I remembered to check where we are just to realise that it was a New Moon yesterday

So what rituals do we do at New Moon? 

🌚 Setting new goals
🌚Starting new things
🌚Make lists 
🌚Start new habits
🌚Set up new rituals, places such as reorganising rooms to fit these goals 

What’s so thrilling about this to me is that I’ve done all these things unintentionally yesterday, at New Moon! 

It immediately made me feel like I’m synchronised with nature and with myself and it made me realise how little time it takes sometimes to notice the energy shift once you set your mind to something ( in my case connecting with myself again and sticking to a routine) 

I also noticed how tight I am in the shoulder area, so I decided to make a mini routine each morning, to open up my shoulders ( I constantly look like I’m crunched forward and straightening my posture feel uncomfortable) so I thought it’d help to do 20 shoulder rotations with yoga strap to improve the mobility in this area, plus it only takes a few minutes (sustainable, very important!) 

And then I went on the 2nd day of Boost and it was exactly what we have been working on, so once again I got this beautiful feeling of synchronicity 🦋

I also found it really useful to do this (Boost) routine in the morning as it impacts my whole day in very positive way plus it gives me more range of movement which is really useful even with everyday tasks!

So dear reader, I’m writing this to you, but first of all to myself as a reminder to take time to self care 🧘🏻‍♀️ 

Last year, when they put us all on full lockdown for the first time, I continued my fitness journey ( I was working out that time 5-6 days even when working) so I made a schedule in my little planner. 

 I squeezed in a bellydance class, a fan veil class, a stretching class, my usual workout, and playing tennis plus walking the dog each day for months. And  well... surprise, surprise I injured myself. 🤕 

I always went for result orientated trainings overdoing it and not resting enough that resulted in exhaustion and injury. 

Then I started making fan veils, and went back working in my full time job again at the same time, stopped exercising and at this point I can still feel the weaknesses and tension in my body as well as the result of not exercising and replacing 🥒 🥗 🍅 with 🍕 🍝 🍸 

So, I’m going to make this 2021 year (yes I know it’s the middle of March, but never too late right?) the year of self care, slowing down, and do the exercises for health and not for looks 👗 

It’s time to listen to my body, do what feels good and actually stick to a plan that is sustainable over the long run! 🧘🏻‍♀️ 

So, today I joined in and started @khalidabech 36 weeks long Boost program for strengthening, relaxing and bellydancing, and I’m suuuuper excited about it!! 🤩

I’ve also invested in anatomy books for yoga and bellydancing, because refreshing knowledge is always a good idea! 💡 

I was originally going to record myself on classes, but it’s where the pressure lives, I don’t want to do all this just so there is something to upload to Instagram, I don’t want to worry about it if my hair isn’t perfect or I’m not in my best workout clothes... soo it is possible I will have some recordings when it feels good but definitely will try and keep it real, enjoyable and as pressure free as possible!’

What has you feeling inspired right now? 

For me it has to be #FANVEILS and #BOOST21. And the way these two things are melting in my mind currently.

For the past 2,5 months I have been filled with drive and energy by the incredible feedbacks I’ve received from the #BOOSTies (aka my #BOOST #Strength - Flexibility Dance Online Program participants) 

What blows me away is how what we’ve been doing seems easy

(It’s simple, gentle but effective exercises in a few short sessions per week to help restore mind-body connection, open up range of motion that has gotten ‘lost’ and then use all that to DANCE)

But it also feels powerful, energetically GOOD, and in many ways.. a necessary (right now) thing to do. Also for me.

Another thing I LOVE, is how the program allows me to get to know a group of incredibly kind, beautiful, funny and mindblowingly creative souls, and every time I see a post from them it makes me realize how lucky we are to still be here, able to communicate at all 💕😭✨

I’ll be sharing some of the words I’ve received from the very first weeks of BOOST (we still have 2 Seasons to go!) 

As wel as posts by @eflowjournal of @flowsilkuk - she is the artist who created these beautiful fans (and the fire ones I posted earlier, too!) that have been sparking my desire to keep dancing and creating, even from my living room.

She started the program yesterday as a ‘catchup’ through recordings, and her posts from this week on how she feels while experiencing BOOST ‘afresh’ are making me feel like time traveling to the beginnings of this Program.

This feels like a wonderful way to begin wrapping up (har!) our very first BOOST21 season. 

Here is a great big THANK YOU to all my BOOSTies, for participating from near and far, both live and through the time-travel way. 

Than you for the trust, joy and inspiration you bring. Can’t wait for today’s session 🤩✨
