APPRECIATION - Sometimes we need a jolt. A shock APPRECIATION - Sometimes we need a jolt. 

A shock. A loss. A sadness.

When something (or someone) is no longer there, we’ll suddenly realize what is important. 

We’ll know, right away, deep in our hearts, what it is that really counts. 

Loss teaches us. 

To appreciate our luck, our privilege, to be here at all. 

Alive. Somehow.

We all have this time here on earth. Not much. 

Limited. 

And yet, it is abundant. 
It’s enough. If we want.

It’s exactly what we make of it.

So. What will we do with this time that we have?

A bit on the darker side? Maybe. 

When trees are cut (I just learned that this beauty was felled), I feel it. Deeply.

They were here before us. 

Without them we (humans) wouldn’t even be here now. 

They can get thousands of years old. 

They live. 

They keep others (and each other) alive. We should learn more about them.

SLOWING DOWN Hmm.. while those of you who know me, SLOWING DOWN
Hmm.. while those of you who know me, know, that I LOVE taking lightning fast action and high energy things.. ⚡️ 

I am also a very big fan of taking it.. slow. Especially in dance. In nature. In life.

We will see different landscapes when we change our pace.

Our perception sharpens, it opens up when we stand still. 

It’s like looking out of the window from a moving train and seeing the landscape change as it flashes by.. versus stepping out of it, standing still, and taking in the space.

Or.. having a walk. 

Moving still, but slowly.

I like both.

Movement. Stillness.

Energy and Calm.

Yin and yang.

Try going for a minimalist meditation session instead. No sounds, no images, just you.

We tried this as a relaxation routine during one of last year’s BOOST classes - for about 20 minutes ☺️

My Top Tips for Minimal Meditation:
🦋 Hydrate well, both before and after. You’ll feel more comfortable and refreshed.
🦋 Put your phone out of immediate reach, your preferably silent.. if it’s not an emergency, it can wait for 24 minutes.
🦋 If sitting up straight makes you feel tired/achey/fidgety, then simply lie down comfortably instead. 
🦋 How? Plop yourself down on a yoga mat or towel or blanket (or a mix!) 
🦋 Optionally you can bolster your head/legs/feet.. with rolled up towels or a set of yoga blocks 
🦋 Bonus: If you’re easily distracted, put on a hoodie to close out the outside world. Keeps you nice and snuggly, too!
🦋 Set yourself a timer (24 minutes is the sweet spot for me) so you don’t feel rushed - make sure it’s not too loud 
🦋 Allow yourself to re-set it afterwards if the session feels too short (may happen!)
🦋 For the extra busy minds.. have a notebook and pen near you. If thoughts start bounce around too much, you can simply ‘write them off’.

Good to go!

ESPECIALLY if I give myself:
- time (this does make a difference.. our biochemistry needs about 20 minutes to ‘flip’)
- permission to do something ‘unimportant’ (even though, you know, self care is important!)
- permission to do meditation ‘wrong’ (whatever this may mean)
- reassurance that it will ‘work’(it always does.. just differently than we may expect)

Sometimes easier said than done.

It can be tempting to try and fit in.

To play small. To go with the herd.

To hide our true selves.. or at least part(s) of it.

To only present what we imagine is most likely to fit the expectations (and gain approval) of others.. 

And yet we long to be appreciated. Accepted. Loved.

For what we are right here, right now.

It’s a tight rope to walk. 

For artists, humans, relationships, life.

Especially in these times.

Social media. Corporate hierarchies. Family roles. Relationships. Our livelihoods (and cultures) may depend on it.

Especially times we’re not fully (yet) accepting ourselves.

And yet, we feel more free when we simply are who we know to be.

Flaws and all. 

It asks courage to take a stand.

To voice ourselves. To let our voices be heard.

Especially for what we feel is important. 

And even more so, to listen in.

So.

Time is a wondrous thing, isn’t it?

I learned recently that it is much less linear than we think (or perceive) it to be 👀

Time perception and time theory has always fascinated me.

But it kind of melts my mind whenever I try to wrap it (heh) around the science.

About our environment. About ourselves. Exploring. Noticing. Limitless..

LIGHT - Seeing things differently ✨ It’s amaz LIGHT - Seeing things differently ✨

It’s amazing how much what we see impacts how we feel, isn’t it?

Tweak the light, change the scene, change the emotions.

And - slightly more worryingly so - what we see/look for also quite strongly influences what we will notice (or pay attention to), next. 

It’s so vital to be/stay aware of this. 

This is what is used ‘on us’ in advertising, media, anything designed to change/steer our thoughts, and thus, our behaviour.

It fascinates me to no end.

I was going to post an upbeat post today..

On what the lighting set up was for this impromptu picture shoot.

On what fun I had tweaking the distance, playing with angles, make up, background, and the resulting picture itself.

Visual trickery. 

But I feel this - the message behind it - is somehow more important.

Our perception is a wonderful thing. 

But it is limited. Sensitive. Influencable.

And we should trust that what we see - in which ever situation - is never the whole picture.

This isn’t a bad thing. Or good. It just is.

So we might as well take some time away from all this ‘input’ to listen more deeply.

Listen to what feels true.

Be aware of the power of visuals.

And if we decide to use it, and/or let it move us, use this power for good ❤️

That’s what Art is for.

STUDY - Good teachers keep learning as well🤓 Ag STUDY - Good teachers keep learning as well🤓 Agreed?

I’ve been lucky enough to get to study with some amazing teachers the past years 

And now we all have access to great teachers in this online era!

One of the main things that I love and admire about them is that - no matter what - they keep on learning, training, deepening and expanding their knowledge and skills throughout the years.

That is a true inspiration.

And I am a bit of a learning fiend. I love diving into interests, deeply, and getting creative with them all.

So.. in order to balance out a time where I’ve been almost only teaching, I’m turning it around and have been studying more again since the holidays.

Different topics. Some dance and movement, some not. 

All visual. 

For those of you who like lists 🤓 

In the past month I’ve signed up for/taken courses on:

- make up (via FB live, by @delannas_style_lab)
- mobile picture editing (via Insta Live, by @delanna_bellydancer_official @wow21_instalove )
- lighting and posing (self-study course by @lyonelstief )
- makeup and portraits (self-study course by @rekiischoeni)
- ballet & floorbarre (Zoom classes with my ‘3D’ teachers Constanze and Giulia of @ballettschule.renoldi 🤗)
- drumsolo techniques (via @drummaticbellydance  by the fantastic @alexdelora )
- and, starting February, Zoom/Video courses with @divadarina_official 

Curious to see what will come out of all that in our #BOOST21 classes - inspiration sprinkles influences into all we do, even when not planned - love the way it creates ‘flow’ 😁🥰❤️✨

Next to all that, I’m sneaking in some very fun bodyweight work out (and soon #kettlebell!) classes by @inspiration_by_johanna and @lets._rock._it of @sportcoaches.be

A big perk of hosting awesome teachers for our @online4children Solidarity channel (in support of @dance4children!) is that I get to enjoy peeking into their classes, too 🤓💪🏻⚡️🔥✨

And I love it. 

So I now have to try and channel it all wisely, that #energy and #inspiration 🤓

I’ve been doing this - in part - by starting up the @jurassicdances channel 😆⚡️🦖 and, of course, in #boost21 🔥✨

BUILDING - How to build great things? One step at BUILDING - How to build great things?

One step at a time.

If you want to create something that lasts, that can keep on growing, or simply takes time.. 

You’ll have to be clear and flexible at the same time.

Clear on the Vision, the Intention - at least as you start.

And Flexible, Adaptable, ready to learn on your way.

The Goal may change. That’s ok.

Learn as you go.

Do while you learn.

Evaluate. Recalibrate. When needed, Adapt.

DREAMING.. What’s going on in this head of mine? DREAMING.. What’s going on in this head of mine? 

A few things. Always a few.

These past two months were supposed to be quieter ones.. End of the year, holidays.

A time for reflecting, regrouping, clearing out, making space, and perhaps.. learning things.

And they started out like that.. at first.

Until a rush of inspiration came in.

An idea. A new thing learned. Then another one. And another one. Together these became a Plan. 

Then another idea followed. 

And another.

And as it often is with ideas, they change, they morph, they refine.

In my case, they also grew.

So.

A few things have been already set in motion.. Some are running, some still new. 

All good.

Now I have to find my pace.

Write things out. Let things settle. See their timing. Find the order..

And then.. I‘ll go for it. 

That‘s how things get made. 

Whenever I follow my intuitions, and turn dreams into actions, or projects.. it gives me a great boost of energy, but it also feels a bit.. unknown.

As if I am in a tiny bit over my head.

Those are the best ones, though.

The current things I‘m building/tweaking/planning/dreaming about/tinkering at?

They all work together, in a way. And they are all collaborations, in a way. 

I‘m already at the end of this caption I see (too many words 🤓)

So tomorrow‘s post will be about:
- what these projects/ideas/creations are
- what they are for
- and what I‘m doing with/for each.. and with whom ❤️

Writing things out.. it helps me clear my mind.

Makes things real. Brings them out. Crystallizes.

It creates space. Frees up the channel.

So what is in that head of mine now?

A bit less than there was before. 

Less is more.

Meet #KZILLA 🦖 So what’s with the Dinosaur s Meet #KZILLA 🦖

So what’s with the Dinosaur suit? You may ask.

That’s a very good question.

A couple of months ago, while we were still in the midst of lockdown 1, I suddenly got the urge to purchase a T-Rex costume.

I didn’t question it. 

The heart wants what it wants.

I have learnt, over time, that if my intuition whispers something.. loudly (preferably at times when I least expect it, doing the dishes, taking a shower, driving slowly, walking in nature, folding socks, ..or even randomly in the middle of the night).. I should listen.

So I did.

I got the suit. 

I didn’t question why. I knew there was a reason.

It revealed itself afterwards. As usual. 

I needed.. fun. The world needed fun. Some Lightness. Joy. Silly dances. Dinosaurs.

It was also a representation of how I felt (..ancient) when presented with a changing world and technology options (for teaching!) that I felt quite unfamiliar with.

‘You should go live.’ My mentor/friend/hero @bozenkabetty said. ‘On FB.’

‘And do a Zoom.’

I was scared.

I never in a million (zillion?🦖) years expected to find so much joy in teaching online.

But I did. #BOOST21 got created. #KZilla was born.

So we adapt.. even the dinosaurs. Because we must. We adapt to stay alive, afloat. And then we grow 🌱

It wasn’t until later that the true mission for KZilla revealed itself. 

She became the (in)official mascot of our @dance4children projects, and Jurasic promoter of the videos in our @online4children solidarity class channel 💛

And as our D4C channel (and KZilla’s fanbase! Thank you ❤️) grew, I felt it was time she got her own place on the internets.

STYLING - I received quite a few questions about t STYLING - I received quite a few questions about the make up in this series - it’s actually a wild mix of drugstore brands and ‘good stuff’ gathered over uh, years 🙈 

So I might upgrade/clean it up a bit in future sets.

So, for now, here’s a list:
- lips: rimmel pencil 1000 kisses 💕 indian pink
- mascara: maybelline lash sensational very black
- foundation: fit me 105 natural ivory by maybelline
- eyeshadow palette: naked 2 by urban decay
- blush/highlighter/contouring palette: afterglow by urban decay

On BREATHING. Today I am knee deep (no longer elb On BREATHING.

Today I am knee deep (no longer elbow deep, thanlfully 😅) into preparations for the upcoming BOOST classes.

More than 50 brave souls 😱 will be joining me in this online movement adventure, and I’m feeling nervous and excited.

A bit scared 😅 but also highly motivated, inspired to MOVE, and thankful. 

It warms my heart that the BOOST Program resonates, and the people who ‘take it on’ are an amazing bunch of people ❤️🦖✨ 

We will start our first (of 3) Strength - Flexibility - Dance Seasons with Upper Body Isolations.

Something I struggled a lot with as a dancer.

Because it’s connected to everything. 

Emotions, confidence, posture. 

How we feel is how we hold and move ourselves - and vice versa, too ❤️

One thing that helps?

Breathing. 

Deep breaths make everything better. 

Your body moves (it’s amazing how much of our body actually moves when we inhale/exhale FULLY 😱) 

Your cells get more oxygen, organs, skin, brain 😜 so everything literally works better.

Related to that, your biochemistry switches depending on how you breathe.

You’ll focus better, coordination improved, you’ll get literally stronger, and feel more flexible instantly.

It’s that powerful.

And when you dance with conscious breathing.. immediately you’ll connect more to your body, the music, your environment. 

So yes. Let’s breathe. 

Today, tomorrow, every day. 

And now.. on to the BOOST adventure 😍 

I’m looking forward to seeing what our Upper Body work from the first 4 weeks will ‘do’ ❤️

As I saw there are a number of new followers on here since the past weeks (thank you!) it feels like a good moment for a (re)introduction 🥰

And.. perhaps even a little philosophising on what that question means to me.

I like to say instead.. 

What interests me.. currently? 
- how things work in our bodies and minds
- how movement changes how we move
- How our environment (external and internal) influences what we perceive

In what areas do I try to apply it right now?
- dance, movement, crosstraining
- photography, lighting, posing
- learning, writing, expression

To help me structure things, I write (see @joyofmovementblog)

To help me channel my (abundant, but easily dispersed) energy in positive ways, I do, I make, I share, I create, and I try to do it in ways that have a positive impact beyond my self.

Part of that I do as a member of team @dance4children (for instsnce via @online4children - go check it out!)
